Olympic Sailing News - 5 August 2016

And so it begins…Today is the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and we will be bringing you all the sailing news every day throughout fortnight.  There has already been some action at the Olympics as the soccer has kicked off, but it won’t be until the opening ceremony that the proceedings officially begin. Keep an eye out during the opening ceremony for the 13 sailors who have the privilege of leading their country out as flag bearer. We even have a run down of the who's who of flag bearers on our website for you so you know exactly who you are looking out for.

As well as the flag bearers, sailing also had the honour of handing the Olympic flame to the Rio Mayor, Eduardo Paes, an act which paid homage to Rio's maritime beginnings and to Brazil's strong tradition in sailing - the sport in which the country has won most Olympic medals. There were seven sailing superstars in attendance for the Olympic flames journey across Guanabara Bay.

Before the official opening we finish our class previews and have some extra little clips from our website and social media for you. You can find everything you need on sailing.org, our dedicated World Sailing Olympic website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Let’s get started shall we. It’s been a long time coming.
