Vendée Globe - The new Safran unveils her colours

It’s in just a week from now on Wednesday 4th March that Morgan Lagravière’s IMOCA will be launched in Lorient. While we wait for that, Safran has revealed the colours of the first of the six VPLP designed boats to be launched this year. Completely grey and turquoise, the new Safran clearly aims to be something very different from the previous design.

Far from being incidental, unveiling a new decoration is an important step, allowing everyone to imagine what she will look like in the future. Morgan Lagravière is very conscious of that and was personally involved in the colours of his new Safran that he will sail around the world in the 2016-2017 Vendée Globe.
Colours that are more fun
"I like it a lot,” said the 27 year old skipper. “From the start, I wanted clear and bright colours. Turquoise makes the project more "fun". It will cheer me up while I’m sailing ion the southern seas. For the sails, I wanted bright colours to make it easier to check the settings at night." As well as the technical aspects related to performance, the branding of a boat is also its identity. It stresses or softens its form. "On the hull, the" midnight blue” line accentuates the bilges and we added the turquoise on top to make the hull warmer,” the designer, Isabelle Keller, said. “With the metallic grey, there will also be nice effects of light between the sky and the sea.”

One more week to wait
The colours are very different from the previous Safran monohull sailed by Marc Guillemot in the last two editions of the Vendée Globe. "We wanted to mark the change from the previous Safran; we are beginning a new adventure with Morgan Lagravière,” Christine Orfila, Safran’s director of brand and marketing, said. With a metallic grey base, evoking the high-tech credentials of Safran, the orange of the old monohull has been replaced by turquoise. The appendages (keel, rudders, foils) are a fluorescent light green. We just have one week to wait to see the real version of this decoration. The first new IMOCA is due to be launched on Wednesday 4th March at the former submarine base in Lorient. Safran will then be officially named at 1300hrs on Saturday 7th March in Lorient, But her home port will be La Trinité-sur-Mer. (www.vendeeglobe.org)
