Luna Rossa Piranha a Napoli – America’s Cup World Series – Prima giornata

Giornata ideale nel golfo di Napoli: sole, brezza da sud ovest 12 nodi, mare piatto.

Match Race - Luna Rossa Piranha inizia la giornata sfidando Artemis nel match race di qualificazione. Piranha vince nettamente la partenza chiudendo la porta al team svedese e vira in testa la boa di disimpegno. Nel lato di lasco l’equipaggio svedese sceglie un bordo verso il largo mentre Piranha va dritto in boa, cadendo in un buco di vento. Gli svedesi prendono il comando della regata e lo mantengono fino alla boa di bolina. Dopo il giro di boa, in un incrocio, Piranha, mure a dritta, infligge una penalità ad Artemis Racing White e riprende la testa della regata, che manterrà fino all’arrivo, qualificandosi così per il turno successivo.
 

Regate di flotta - Alla partenza della prima regata di flotta Luna Rossa Piranha e Luna Rossa Swordfish scelgono due opzioni opposte: Luna Rossa Piranha parte in boa e Luna Rossa Swordfish sceglie l’altra l’estremità della linea, in barca giuria, disturbata da China team che le chiude il cancello. Alla boa di disimpegno Oracle vira in testa, seguito da Luna Rossa Piranha ed Emirates Team New Zealand. Nel bordo di bolina le posizioni di testa rimangono invariate ma nel primo lato di poppa Emirates Team New Zealand riesce a prendere il comando della regata che manterrà fino alla fine. Nella seconda bolina il gruppo di testa sceglie di bordeggiare verso terra mentre Ben Ainslie Racing vira verso il largo e viene favorito da un salto di vento che gli consente di prendere la terza posizione. La classifica rimarrà invariata fino all’arrivo, dove Luna Rossa Piranha termina quarta. Luna Rossa Swordfish chiude in quinta posizione dopo aver conquistato l’interno in boa contro Artemis all’ultimo disimpegno.

Nella seconda regata ambedue le Luna Rossa partono in boa, sottovento a tutta la flotta, e arrivano al disimpegno in testa insieme a Emirates Team New Zealand. Alla boa il vento cala quasi totalmente; il gruppo è molto compatto e i primi a prendere il vento sono Energy, Emirates Team New Zealand, Ben Ainslie Racing e Luna Rossa Piranha. Alla boa di poppa è Ben Ainslie Racing ad avere la meglio e a portarsi in testa, davanti a Luna Rossa Piranha ed Energy, mentre Luna Rossa Swordfish è in settima posizione. La prima bolina vede queste posizioni invariate, mentre nel successivo bordo di poppa Luna Rossa Swordfish riesce a riagganciare Artemis e China Team e a superarli, conquistando la quinta posizione. Sia nella seconda bolina che nel lato finale di poppa, nonostante alcuni salti di vento, queste posizioni rimarranno invariate e le due Luna Rossa concludono la regata rispettivamente seconda e quinta.

A perfect day for sailing in the Gulf of Naples: sun, 12 knots south-westerly breeze and a flat sea.

Match Race

Luna Rossa Piranha sailed the match race quarter finals against Artemis Racing White. Luna Rossa Piranha won the start by closing the gate to the Swedish team and rounded the first mark in front.  On the first downwind leg team Artemis chooses to sail towards the open sea whereas Luna Rossa Piranha goes straight to the mark but is slowed down by a sudden lull. As a consequence the Swedes take the lead of the race and stay there all the way to the windward mark. After rounding the mark, in a crossing, Luna Rossa Piranha, on starboard, inflicts a penalty on Artemis and keeps the up to the finish, thus qualifying for the semi-finals.

Fleet Race 1

Luna Rossa Piranha and Luna Rossa Swordfish choose two opposite starting positions: Luna Rossa Piranha at the pin end whereas Luna Rossa Swordfish chooses the Committee boat, disturbed by China team who closes the gate. At the reaching mark Oracle tacks in front, followed by Luna Rossa Piranha and Emirates Team New Zealand.  On the beat the positions at the front of the fleet remain unchanged. During the first downwind leg, Emirates Team New Zealand takes the lead and holds this position up to the finish line. On the second upwind leg the leaders choose to sail towards the land whereas Ben Ainslie sails offshore where he is favored by a wind shift and moves into third place. The ranking remains unchanged up to the finish line, with Luna Rossa Piranha finishing 4^th and Swordfish taking a 5^th after gaining the inside to Artemis at the rounding of the final mark.

Fleet Race 2

In the second fleet race both Luna Rossa start at the pin end, sailing to leeward of the fleet and rounding the first mark together with Emirates Team New Zealand. In proximity of the reaching mark the wind dies and the fleet is very compact.  The first teams to catch fresh wind are Energy, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Piranha but at the downwind mark Ben Ainslie Racing takes the lead and moves in front of Luna Rossa Piranha and Energy, whereas Luna Rossa Swordfish lies 7^th. On the first upwind leg these positions are unchanged, whereas on the downwind leg Luna Rossa Swordfish catches up with Artemis and China and overtakes them, finishing the race in 5^th place. Despite several shifts in wind direction, these positions remain unchanged and the two Luna Rossa close the race respectively in 2^nd (Piranha) and 5^th place (Swordfish).
