RIVA DEL GARDA, Italy - Despite
it being Autumn, it was an exceptional day for wind on Trentino Garda a
day which had been well perceived by the technical staff of Fraglia
Vela Riva, the organising club and by the regatta committee. They had
studied the weather forecast and had predicted the early arrival of the
wind from the south. The crews were sent on the water at 11. 00 am with
the race course positioned further to the left than usual to make the
most of the gusts registered in that part of the lake.
Even with the
stronger winds compared to the previous 2 days (16-18 knots), the young
crews of the 29er fleet from 9 nations aged from 14-17 years, had no
difficulty in handling and taking charge of their vessels. Five exciting
and highly skilful races were completed bringing to a total of 12 races
completed out of the 14 scheduled with one day of competition still
remaining. After the ninth race (the second of today), there was an
upset in the leaders board with Germans Jasper Steffens and Tom Lennart
Braukmann taking over the lead from Munro-Harris of GB. Their
performance was decidedly brilliant despite having a black flag for a
false start in regatta 11. This was duly compensated in regatta 12 with a
fine win. The Germans now hold an 8 point lead over Brits Munro-Harris.
In third place are Kelapanda-Thakkar of India who took advantage of the
false starts committed by Bonilla-Chapon of Spain, to climb in the
standings one race at a time. For this crew their maiden voyage on Lake
Garda has certainly been a positive experience! The first female crew is
that of sisters Munte-Carrasco of Spain who lie in tenth place overall.
With
two races to go (racing conditions for tomorrow permitting), the fight
for a medal remains heated not only for the prestigious Eurocup title,
but also for the prizes at stake offered by Fraglia Vela Riva and their
sponsor Hannspree. The crews who reach the podium will each win a
Hannspree TV!
