With three days remaining to the start of Global Ocean Race (GOR) Leg 5, the GOR Race Organisation and the four Class40 teams with an entourage of friends, family and supporters attended the Leg 4 prize giving at the Charleston Yacht Club in City Marina with two of the GOR’s Class40s, Cessna Citation and Financial Crisis, moored directly in front of the clubhouse. The club’s Commodore, Tony Ward, presented the prizes with an audience including the Italian and Slovak Honorary Consuls, club members, friends, family and supporters of the GOR teams and a delegation of Slovaks living in the US and visiting Charleston to support the GOR’s Italian-Slovak skipper, Marco Nannini.
Following music by the Charleston Virtuosi – a Slovakian cello and violin duo based in the USA, Peter Kiral and Lujza Durisova - GOR Race Director, Josh Hall, and Commodore Tony Ward distributed the awards. For the Leg 4 prizes for the 6,700-mile course from Punta del Este, Uruguay, to Charleston (see the complete Leg 4 ranking below), the four teams were awarded unique, stainless steel, engraved sails by local artist, Fred Moore.
New Zealand skipper, Conrad Colman and his Australian co-skipper, Scott Cavanough returned to the stage to collect two Luminox Colormark Watches for the bluQube 24-hour Run Prize having hit the highest average speed in Leg 4 with Cessna Citation at 286.3nm over 24 hours, although this speed falls short of Colman’s Leg 2 24-hour run of 359nm.
More Luminox watches were awarded with Scott Cavanough of Cessna Citation receiving an exclusive Luminox Yachting Countdown Timer for winning the Leg 4 Luminox Photo Competition with the Australian co-skipper’s cockpit image taking 65% of the total votes cast. A second Luminox Yachting Countdown Timer was presented to Marco Nannini who won the Luminox Spirit of the GOR Award for his continued involvement throughout the GOR with Slovakian communities around the world and his entertaining and popular Mustang Club of Italy gatherings at each stopover.
As the Leg 4 crew of Sec. Hayai – Erik van Vuuren and Yvonne Beusker - had already returned home to Holland, the yacht’s Leg 5 co-skipper, Frans Budel, was on stage to collect the Garmin Navigation Award for Van Vuuren and Beusker, accepting two handheld Garmin eTrex 30 GPS units for their faultless performance following a pit stop in Fortaleza, Brazil.
For the first time in the GOR, the Seahorse Magazine and www.thedailysail.com Media Prize was split between two Class40s with Sergio Frattaruolo of Financial Crisis and Scott Cavanough of Cessna Citation winning a year’s subscription to Seahorse Magazine and www.thedailysail.com for the high quality of the video footage recorded on board.
At the end of the evening, the Charleston Yacht Club’s Commodore, Tony Ward, presented each of the skippers with a CYC baseball cap and each team was presented with supplies of coffee and tea for the North Atlantic Leg 5 by Brad and Jacki Mallett of Coastal Coffee Roasters.

Leg 5 start details: The start of GOR Leg 5 from Charleston, South Carolina, to Les Sables d’Olonne, France (3,600 miles), will be at 1030hrs local time (14:30 GMT) on Saturday 19th May 2012. The early start will allow the boats to benefit from the ebb tide as they exit Charleston Harbour and pass between the offshore breakwaters to seaward of Morris and Sullivans Islands. The start line will stretch across the Cooper River south of the Ravenel bridge from a flagpole mounted on Charleston’s Waterfront Park pier to a Committee Boat anchored west of the northern tip of Shutes Folly Island.
