Incidente durante la fase di alberatura dell'America's Cup LUNA ROSSA

Venerdì 16 Novembre, alle 11:15  locali, durante le operazioni di alberatura dell’ala rigida (n.d.r. di 40 metri di altezza) con vento di circa 15 nodi da  SW, nel momento in cui l’ala si trovava già in posizione quasi verticale e pronta per essere posizionata sulla piattaforma del catamarano AC 72 Luna Rossa, si è verificato un improvviso salto di direzione del vento (circa 60 gradi) che ha fatto “volare” l’ala, impennatasi verso la gru.  Durante la manovra Fred Gastinet, membro dello shore team, è stato colpito da uno dei carrelli mobili che hanno la funzione di trattenere l’ala e ha riportato la frattura, fortunatamente non scomposta, della tibia.

Fred è stato subito soccorso e trasportato all’ospedale, dove è stato operato e ingessato. Non sono state riscontrate ulteriori complicazioni e le sue condizioni sono soddisfacenti. Il suo morale è alto e, mezz’ora dopo l’operazione, scherzava già con i membri del team che sono andati a trovarlo.

Friday, November 16 ^th at 11.15 AM New Zealand time, while assembling the wingsail (which is 40 metres high), in about 15 knots of SW wind, as the wingsail was almost vertical and ready for fitting on the platform of the AC72 Luna Rossa catamaran, the wind suddenly shifted by about 60 degrees; this caused the wingsail to "fly" and rear up towards the crane. As this happened, Fred Gastinet, a member of the shore team, was hit by one of the mobile trolleys that hold the wing and he suffered a fracture of the shinbone - fortunately compound.

Fred was immediately helped to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and his leg was put in a cast. No further complications occurred and his condition is satisfactory. He is in high spirits and, half an hour after surgery, he was already joking with the team members who went to see him.
