World Sailing seeking feedback on future initiatives for the sport

Sustainability Agenda 2030 includes 59 ambitious recommendations for the sport across technical standards, events, training, venues and facilities, members and participation.  The targets support the UN sustainable development goals which are widely adopted across the world and set out how the sport can contribute to them.

In November 2016, World Sailing announced a Sustainability Strategy that included the launch of a Sustainability Commission. Mike Golding OBE was appointed as Chair of the Commission and following their first meeting, a list of targets was created.

Targets include developing a reuse program for used equipment benefiting sailors in emerging nations, gender equality at events and for race officials, accelerating research into end of life options for boats, reducing the use of coach boats by 50% and abolishing single use plastics at its events to name a few.

Dan Reading, World Sailing's Sustainability Programme Manager commented: "There are some very ambitious targets that we hope the sailing community and stakeholders can support.

"We have conducted a thorough review of our initiatives and we would like to hear from people to gauge support, or to make suggestions if they think we have missed out other opportunities that are attainable.

"Before the targets are formally voted on by World Sailing's Council, it is important to give our stakeholders and the worldwide sailing community an opportunity to participate in the formulation of our targets. Because of the large timescale, we are being ambitious and believe that whilst futureproofing the sport, we can really contribute to global sustainability.

"We do not want to reinvent the wheel as there is already some fantastic work going on in this area but we would like to amplify current projects by sharing with our global stakeholders."
