Kiel Week set to bring EUROSAF series to a close

A streamlined British team will contest the fourth and final stage of the 2014 EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup series in Kiel, Germany, starting this weekend (21-25 June).  Fifteen British Sailing Team athletes in four classes will race on the Schilksee – site of the 1972 Olympic sailing competition – with 49er duo Dave Evans and Ed Powys aiming for their second straight EUROSAF victory off the back of their win at the Sail for Gold Regatta earlier this month.

They’ll line up with 72 other crews in the men’s skiff event at Kiel Week, including Podium Potential squad teammates Nic Asher-Fynn Sterritt, James Peters-Sam Batten, Jack Hawkins-Chris Thomas and Chris Taylor-Dominick Burke.

Paralympic Champion Helena Lucas will fly the flag in the Open 2.4mR fleet, in which able-bodied and disabled sailors will race alongside each other.  Lucas, who has finished on the podium in four from her five events this year, will count local hero and Hyeres World Cup winner Heiko Kroeger, and the Netherlands’ reigning IFDS World Champion Guus Bijlard among her rivals at this five-day regatta.

Lorenzo Chiavirini, the Laser under 21 European bronze medallist, will continue his rehabilitation on German waters following an early season wrist break.  He’s joined by fellow Podium Potential squad sailor Jack Wetherell in the 93-boat Laser fleet, while up and coming 49erFX duo Vikki Payne and Steph Orton are reunited for Kiel Week, with Katie Tomsett having stepped in for Orton at the front of the boat at the Sail for Gold event.

The EUROSAF series, now in its second year, complements the ISAF Sailing World Cup series and Class Championships by providing quality competition in the Olympic and Paralympic Classes.

EUROSAF series racing at Kiel Week gets underway on Saturday 21 June, with medal races scheduled for Wednesday 25 June.   (www.rya.org.uk)
