Taylor Canfield (ISV) begins 2014 like he ended 2013, atop of the Open
Match Race Rankings. The US Virgin Islander was crowned ISAF World Match
Racing Champion at the Monsoon Cup, the final event of the 2013 Alpari
World Match Racing Tour and will be seen as the one to beat throughout
2014.
World #2 Ian Williams (GBR) held World #1 for 16 consecutive ranking
releases prior to Canfield taking it in August 2013 and will want to
regain top spot in 2014.
Lower down the rankings, Sam Gilmour (AUS) moves into the top 25 for the
first time in his career following a medal rush in December and
January. The Australian won the ISAF Grade 3 Kingdom Match Race
Qualification regatta in Zallaq, Bahrain in December and followed it up
with another victory.
Gilmour finished ahead of Olli-Pekka Lumijärvi (FIN) to take full points from the ISAF Grade 2 Kingdom Match Race. Runner up Lumijärvi moves up two places to World #30.
Competing on home waters in January at the ISAF Grade 2 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, Gilmour almost made it a hat trick of wins for the current ranking period but lost out to brother David Gilmour (AUS).
With three strong performances Younger brother Sam moves to World #25 from World #33 whilst David Gilmour also hits a personal best, climbing two spots to World #12.
Despite losing out in the final of the Cleanport Winter Match Race series - Act 3 to Max Trippolt (AUT), Christina Binder (AUT) is one of the biggest movers. In a winner takes all single race final in Izola, Slovenia Trippolt got the better of his compatriot but Binder climbs a mammoth 81 places to World #89. Trippolt's victory moves him to World #44
With several ISAF Grade 3, 4 and 5 regattas there is further movement in the Open Rankings.
