I’m looking forward to heading out to
Lanzarote next week with the some of the British Sailing Team for a
winter fitness camp. I was in Gran Canaria last week for
what was meant to be a quality week’s work on the water with my usual
training group and my coach, Barrie. But after about a month of being
pretty ilI, was struck down with full on tonsillitis.I managed to sail on the first day but I think that tipped me over
the edge. I couldn’t get out of bed for a couple of days, which was vey
boring and pretty frustrating. I did think about coming home early but
to be honest I was better off where I was, just staying in bed.
Being ill for a month has meant my physical training has been
limited. Obviously I will have to take it carefully in Lanzarote but I
am sure by the time we get home we will be ready for a rest again!
Unlike some of our other fitness camps which would be purely road bike
based, this will be more of a cross fitness camp with some swimming,
biking, gym work; a full fitness holiday!
Over the next three months my windsurfing base is going to be Gran
Canaria. Funding is very tight at the moment, and we have to be really
careful about how we spend our money in our campaigns. Gran Canaria is
an affordable option with decent conditions so I can keep costs down and
training volume up. It does mean I won’t be doing Rio or Miami in the
New Year, but I have three trips to Gran Canaria planned over January
and February where I can just do a stack of sailing and other training. (da www.rya.org.uk)
