Campionato del Mondo Platu 25- Cala de' Medici - Rosignano (LI)

The 2012 Worlds is starting and for the Platu 25 class the appointment in Cala de' Medici is a great occasion for crews to meet and compete. We met Fernando Lago, the Platu 25 International Class Secretary, trying to understand what is on.

How does the situation look like? Is Platu 25 class going to withstand in spite of the general economic crisis?

F.L. : "Today we are going through a transition after the big growth of the Class from 2006 to 2009, and its consolidation right after the 09 World Championships in Punta Ala; now there is a bit of stagnation that we hope to reactivate with the upcoming World Champs at Cala de' Medici. All the events in Italy have been a real success for the P25 class so far, although we can't forget about the current world crisis that hits the sport of sailing everywhere, and specially in Italy and Spain which are the biggest national fleets in the world, together with Germany".

The Worlds is always the occasion to consolidate the class and find new energies and inputs. What does the appointment with the Worlds in Cala de' Medici mean for you?

F. L. "I would say that for me, for all of us, the WC is always a reason of happiness because we enjoy one full week of sailing, with friends from all over the world, most of them we meet just once every year. Also because there are many meetings and ideas, projects and plans are shared with the collaboration of all the owners".

What do you think about the Platu 25 growing outside Europe, especially concerning the Turkish Fleet or the Thailand one? Could we say that from East a new wind is blowing?

F.L. "No doubt we can't understand neither plan the growth of our sport or our Class without looking East. However, wherever there is interest for a technical, fun and economical one design race boat, there is a prospect Platu 25 owner".

Fernando Lago will be in Cala de' Medici with his team. They have chartered a fast boat and they hope in a good performance.

Which are about you the most competitive boats that will be protagonists in the next Worlds?

F.L. "The last 4 world champions will be racing: Modus Vivendi (2008 and 2010 World Champions), Mar de Frades (2009) and Euz II Monella Vagabonda (2011). In my opinion, they are the rivals to beat".

Which are your expectations for this Worlds in Cala de' Medici?

F. L. "A well-organized sailing event, with a very high competitive level, and a class that remains strong after more than 10 years. I hope we have good winds too".
